Of all the things to have a charter for, trees are best. They bring life, joy, nature, and longevity together; they help us love the past and believe in a better future. This is a 200-year old oriental plane tree in Emmanuel College which is a daily source of inspiration to us all. Over its life it has seen the college grow and change; and countless generations of students and Fellows have drawn succour from its light and shade. It will see countless more before it grows old, and who knows then the stories it could tell? Trees are a symbol that we care about nature, on which we so wholly depend. The Tree Charter should help us all give trees the central place they deserve in our thinking and planning for the future.
